In today’s world, business moves at a breakneck speed. The customer is always right, deadlines must be met, and our bosses are not always the easiest to get along with. When you include the rest of the chaos life throws at us, kids, spouses, bills, and even recreation, the pressure can easily make you feel like the proverbial elephant is sitting on your chest. Depression can set in before you know it. Nonetheless, we must find a way to balance it all and succeed. Here are a few ways to ward off the threat:

Focus on Your Health

When we have a bad day or a series of bad events take over our lives, most of us tend to react by grabbing the thing that takes us to our happy place. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, this is a cigarette or a cold one. For some, it is an illegal drug. We lose sleep, tend to stress eat, or not eat at all. These “escapes” will not only not help fix the problem, they will usually make it worse. Focus on better health. Get the right amount of sleep, stay away from habits that are obviously not good for you. This will allow your body to naturally fight depression much better.

Get Some Sunshine

Go outside! It does not matter how old you are. We all need time to “play” outside. For some of us, that means sitting on the porch enjoying the breeze. For others, it could mean a spontaneous backyard football game and cookout. Either way, good ole fashion sunshine is good for us. Along with boosting our vitamin D levels, which are necessary for bone health and can help protect against things like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, it also raises your serotonin levels. This is one of our brain’s happy chemicals.

Practice Meditation or Prayer

Life is full of ups and downs. If you hold it all in, it can leave you living each day on the brink of erupting like a volcano. Talking to friends and loved ones always alleviates some of the pressure. However, there are some things you do not feel comfortable sharing with anyone but God. He knows already anyway, right? Meditation can allow you to separate yourself from your problems and reach a state of peace and calm that allows you to deal wiser with your day to day issues.

Business can be a pleasure, but we all know that there are bad days, and sometimes there are catastrophes. Taking care of yourself is a great way to curb the attack of depression. Refer to these tips often as a reminder. Life is too short and there is too much to enjoy to be enslaved to depression.
