As a qualified engineer, you have an in-demand and specialist skill-set. While you can use this to find a great employed position, why not consider the freedom and benefits of starting your own entrepreneurial venture?

If you are a recent graduate and know that the average nine-to-five position is just not for you, or perhaps an industry-veteran with decades of experience looking for a change, then consider these start-up business ideas for engineers.

Designing Homeware

If you are naturally artistic and creative, then you could use your engineering skills for decorative purposes. By combining the two, you could design an array of homewares, from metal wall signs and plaques, to create industrial furniture, and then sell on the likes of Not on the High Street or Etsy.

Jewellery Making

Again, if you would like to channel your engineering talent into more decorative pursuits, you could start a jewellery making business. Jewellery design comes in all forms, from using simple wire and pliers, to creating delicate bespoke engagement rings. Or, you could save up for a hydraulic press (from the likes of S G S Engineering) and make embossed designs.

Building and Restoring Cars

Designing and restoring cars could be great ventures for engineers – although it is worth mentioning that this kind of business may be more complex to start, requiring research, compliance with regulations and increased capital. You could design and manufacture self-build kit cars, or turn your hobby of restoring vintage cars into a lucrative business.

3D Designing and Printing

3D technology has boomed in recent years and as such, 2017 is the perfect time to start a 3D printing business. No matter your passion, there are so many business ideas in this area, each with a lot of potential. You could design customised dolls, create children’s toys or collectable figurines, produce implants and prosthetics, or print 3D ultrasounds.

Share Your Expertise

If the idea of producing or designing products has little appeal, then how about starting a business that enables you to share your engineering expertise? There are a number of legitimate business ideas that could do just this, either via starting a lucrative blog, tutoring university students, or selling classes and workshops.

Sell Your Services

Similarly, as an engineer, you could consider selling your services. As an individual with specialist and expertise knowledge, you could start your own consultancy. As a consultant you can choose your industry, such as construction, oil or 3D printing, and charge clients for design, maintenance and project management.
