“The road will teach you how to love and let go. It can be lonely, but it’s the only thing we’ve ever known.”  The road, as described by musicians like Nahko and Medicine for the People in this line, can be as lonely as it is exciting. For the rest of us, the road is likely less romantic. Whether you are commuting to work, gathering basic necessities or taking a break from the grind to travel, your road or railway or bus schedule and even your grocery list, are all possible because of the transport industry.

Transport is Vital to Our Contemporary Lifestyle

Bus or air, road or rails, even by sea, the transport industry gets you where you need to be while simultaneously getting the things you need to you.  Each sector requires a multitude of skilled workers employed in areas such as service, engineering, construction, planning and maintenance. Without transport, we would, quite literally, be standing still. While we may not give these individuals much thought as long as things are running smoothly, they are an integral part of how we live and work every day.

Schedules Can Vary

While some jobs in transport may be stationary and follow a typical work week schedule, others require long hours that may be in conflict with the schedule of family and friends. So along with the intrigue of being in motion, people considering a career in the industry have to weigh the benefits against the schedule conflict they will have with those who are staying still.

Job Opportunities Are Numerous in the Transport Industry

Working in the rail sector of the transport industry may involve adhering to one of these atypical schedules, but it can also be an exciting opportunity.  Those who are passionate about all the positive aspects of a career in rail can become highly trained in the industry. Training programs exist for those who want to learn skills in many areas, including rail engineering.

Become a Rail Engineer

The National Training Academy for Rail recently opened in Northampton. It will provide training for several positions within the industry. Read more in this article about the academy to learn about the programs available to aspiring rail engineers. Those who complete these programs will obtain practical experience that will make them diversely skilled employees in management, technical support and engineering.

Working in transport means being part of the big picture. It means getting people and companies the goods they need. It means being part of the infrastructure required to help communities prosper. It might offer you the chance to see your town, city or country through a new lens as you move through it. It offers security as rail continues to be an integral part of our way of life.

Maybe musicians aren’t the only authority on the road. Those who choose a career in the transport industry are the ones planning, building, maintaining and moving on those roads (and rails) every day.   They may never write a song an about it, but they certainly won’t be standing still.
