The scenic walking path situated to the south-west of Huddersfield, running alongside the Blackmoorfoot reservoir, has just been improved.

It’s characterised by some tranquil water edges and woodland, with a pulling-factor migrating birds and wildlife can’t resist. Some lovely views can also be enjoyed across the surrounding landscape and the waterside.

Blackmoorfoot makes for quite the popular destination for recreational visitors who love to watch the birds, enjoy a gentle stroll or admire the beautiful scenery. Its location is between Slaithwaite and Meltham and there’s car parking available on the roadside of Reservoir Road.

That part of the path which is accessible runs for about a mile around both sides of the Blackmoorfoot reservoir. It’s fairly flat and has short gradients. It also features sloping entrance points to the north east and south west of the reservoir.

General maintenance on the paths was recently carried out by Yorkshire Water. The walking path has been resurfaced on much of its length, with fine aggregate topping making it flatter, smoother and a better surface for running. Cut backs have been made to the vegetation and it has been scraped from the edges of the path so that the full width is regained. Drainage has also been improved to ensure effective water run-off and avoid the settling of water after heavy rain.

Alastair Harvey, Recreation Advisor at Yorkshire Water said; “We hope that these latest upgrades will improve the experience visitors and families have when they visit Blackmoorfoot. The paths are in great shape ready for the warmer weather when visitor numbers tend to increase dramatically.”

He added, “Everyone is welcome to enjoy walking on our land, including dog owners. We just ask everyone to act responsibly and with consideration to other users. We ask dog owners to pick up and take home any fouling by their dog and also keep them on short leads at all times, but particularly during lambing and bird nesting times which are sensitive times of the year.”
